Crime prevention is a pattern of attitudes and behaviors directed at reducing the threat of crime and enhancing the sense of safety and security to positively influence the quality of life in our society and to develop environments where crime cannot flourish. Crime prevention is not just the business of law enforcement because law enforcement alone cannot prevent crime; it also takes involvement by concerned citizens of all ages. In order to build a good Crime Prevention foundation in our community requires that the community first be educated about the challenges and problems within it. With that in mind, this newsletter will feature some of the training opportunities that the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) offers.
Descriptions of some of the courses offered:
Refuse To Be A Victim: Experts agree that the single most important step toward ensuring your personal safety is making the decision to refuse to be a victim. That means that you must have an overall personal safety strategy in place before you need it. Through a four-hour seminar called Refuse To Be A Victim®, you can learn the personal safety tips and techniques you need to avoid dangerous situations and avoid becoming a victim. Hundreds of federal, state, and local law enforcement officials across the country have implemented Refuse To Be A Victim® into their crime prevention and community policing initiatives. Some of the topics presented in the Refuse To Be A Victim® seminar include:
· Home Security
· Personal Security
· Automobile Security
· Workplace Security
· Technological Security
Neighborhood Watch: Effective crime prevention for the neighborhood or community requires a process of identifying and solving problems, taking immediate steps to improve safety, developing conditions that forestall problems, and determining the future direction the community needs to take. Topics covered in the CSPD training for these subjects include:
· Fast Facts on the Colorado Springs Police Department
· When Should I Call the Police?
· Difference between an Emergency and Non-Emergency Call
· What Should I Do Until the Police Arrive?
· What Not To Do Until the Police Arrive?
· How Does The Neighborhood Watch Fit In?
· The Role of the Block Captain and the Neighborhood Watch Group Members
Crime Prevention Through Environment Design (CPTED): CPTED principles within a neighborhood can be extremely beneficial for the community. Concepts discussed in this course include:
· Accessibility for residents employs elements like doors, shrubs, fences, and gates to deny admission to a crime target and to create a perception among offenders that there is a risk in selecting targets in this neighborhood.
· Surveillance utilizes design features to increase the visibility of a property or building. The proper placement and design of windows, lighting, and landscaping increases the ability to observe intruders as well as regular users.
· Territoriality employs such design elements as sidewalks, landscaping, and porches to help distinguish between public and private areas and helps users exhibit signs of “ownership” that send “hands off” messages to would-be offenders.
· Physical maintenance — repair, replacement, and general upkeep allows for the continued use of a space for its intended purpose. Serves as an additional expression of ownership.
· Order maintenance — removing undesirable environmental conditions (i.e., graffiti, trash within a park) and enhancing environmental conditions that support safety, order, and comfort.
Fire and Life Safety Evacuation Training: Fire and Life Safety Evacuation Training will provide participants with life skills to know what to do in emergency situations. Evacuation and Life Safety skills will be discussed. This will include home, work and travel. How to use smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguishers and home evacuation plan set ups will be reviewed. Additionally, preparedness responsibilities will be discussed.
CSPD Citizens Academy: The Colorado Springs Police Department Academy educates citizens about the duties and responsibilities, as well as the policies and procedures, of the department, and the citizen's role in the interaction of citizens and police through a series of eleven classes. In addition to helping the citizens better understand the police department, it in turn helps the police department better understand the citizens and their concerns
